Sinusitis and bronchitis are two very common conditions to watch out for in the damp and cold conditions of the winter months, especially in northern climates. Sinus pressure and headaches, nasal discharge, post-nasal drip, and deep, racking coughs can cause sinusitis and bronchitis sufferers to feel simply miserable. By taking a few easy steps, we can avoid them while enjoying the chill.

Sinuses are hollow air spaces in the nasal tracts. Each sinus has an opening into the nose for free exchange of air and mucus and each is joined with the nasal passage by a continuous mucous membrane lining. Therefore, anything that causes a swelling in the nose, be it an infection, an allergic reaction, or an immune reaction, can affect the sinuses.
Air trapped within a blocked sinus along with pus or other secretions may cause pressure on the sinus wall. The result is intense pain of a sinus attack. Similarly, when air is prevented from entering a paranasal sinus by a swollen membrane at the opening, a vacuum can be created that also causes pain.

- Morning headaches are typical of a sinus problem.
- Pain when your forehead over the frontal sinuses is touched may indicate that your frontal sinuses are inflammed. Heaviness in the head while bending the head may also indicate the same.
- Infection in the maxillary sinuses can cause your upper jaw and teeth to ache and your cheeks to become too tender to touch. Since the ethmoid sinuses are near the tear ducts in the corner of the eyes, inflammation of these cavities often causes swelling of the eyelids and tissues around eyes and pain between the eyes. Ethmoid inflammation also can cause tenderness when the sides of your nose are touched, a loss of smell, and a stuffy nose.
- Although sphenoid sinuses are less frequently affected, infection in this area can cause earaches, neck pain and deep aching at the top of your head.
Home remedies for Sinusitis
You can use home remedies to lessen the discomfort:
- Inhaling steam from a vaporizer or a hot cup of water can soothe inflamed sinus cavities.
- Saline nasal spray can be purchased from a pharmacy.
- A hot water bottle; hot, wet compresses; or an electric heating pad applied over the inflamed area can also be comforting.
- Mango serves as an effective home remedy for preventing frequent attacks of sinus as it is packed with loads of vitamin A.
- Consume pungent foods like onion and garlic as a part of your daily meals.
- Tie a tsp of black cumin seeds in a thin cotton cloth and inhale.

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, those being the air passages that extend from the windpipe into the lungs. The inflammation may be caused by a virus, bacteria, smoking or the inhalation of chemical pollutants or dust. Consequently, the air passages become clogged by mucus and irritation increases.
In response, a heavy secretion of mucus develops, which causes the characteristic cough of bronchitis. It may be either acute or chronic. Bronchitis often follows a common cold or any infection of the nose and throat.
People at increased risk both of getting bronchitis and of having more severe symptoms include the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, smokers and anyone with repeated exposure to lung irritants.
Acute bronchitis most commonly occurs after an upper respiratory infection such as common cold or a sinus infection. You may see symptoms such as fever with chills, muscle aches, nasal congestion and a sore throat.
Cough is a common symptom of bronchitis. The cough may be dry or may produce phlegm. Significant phlegm production suggests that the lower respiratory tract and the lung itself may be in fected, and you may have pneumonia.
The cough may last for more than two weeks. Continued forceful coughing may make your chest and abdominal muscles sore. Coughing can be severe enough at times to injure the chest wall or even cause you to pass out.
Wheezing may occur because of the inflammation of the airways. This may leave you short of breath.
Home remedies for Bronchitis Treatment
- A mixture of 1 teaspoon of basil powder, 1 teaspoon of ginger paste and 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder mixed with 20-30 ml of water, should be taken 3 times a day.
- Powder of 1 garlic clove taken on empty stomach with water is effective.
- Steam inhalation is very good.
- Curd and sour things should be avoided.
- Certain fruits like banana and guava are contra indicated. Sour fruit should be avoided during bronchitis.
- Exposure to cold wind and rain should be avoided.
- Fried and refrigerated food stuff is strictly prohibited.
- Physical exercises, sexual indulgence and smoking should be refrained from.
- You should not sleep during day time.
