Boils (furuncles) and carbuncles (a cluster of boils) are pus-filled bumps formed under skin. These painful bumps occur when bacteria infect and inflame one or more of the hair follicles. Boils start as red, tender lumps that are quickly filled with pus, grow large and become more painful.
Boils may occur anywhere on the skin, but usually appear on your face, neck, armpits, buttocks or thighs – the hair-bearing areas where you’re most likely to sweat or experience friction.
The following home remedies have been known to treat boils and carbuncles naturally.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil, extracted from the leaves of the Australian tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), has been used in traditional medicine. Owing to its antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal properties, it can be used topically to treat boils. However, there’s no conclusive scientific evidence that shows it’s beneficial. The remedy can cause allergic reactions in some people; consult your doctor if you have any problems with its use.
Turmeric when taken internally can dissolve and heal boils in a few days time as it has anti-inflammatory and blood purifying effects. To get rid of boils or carbuncles, take one teaspoonful of turmeric powder in warm water thrice a day. Another way to use turmeric for boils is by making a paste of turmeric powder and placing it directly on the boil. You can also buy turmeric in capsule form and set the dose after consulting a doctor.
Castor oil is another effective home remedy for boils and carbuncles. The anti-inflammatory properties help lessen the swelling and tenderness of boils. Dip cotton ball in the oil and apply it on the boil. Gauze it with a band-aid. The oil draws the poison right out of the boil and heals the boil in two to three days.
Warm compress can heal the boils and carbuncles quickly. Apply a warm compress to the affected area several times a day to help the boil rupture and drain fast.
One of the reasons that cause boils is weakened immune system. Add green leafy and organic vegetables in your diet to fulfil your daily nutritional requirement. Foods with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Phytonutrients strengthen the immune system.
If home remedies don’t seem to work or when you have accidentally pricked or squeezed a boil, consult the doctor. Also, call your doctor if the boil or carbuncle seems to be extremely painful, they last longer than two weeks or are accompanied by fever.
