5 Home Remedies for an Eye Stye


Stye of the eye is a bacterial infection that affects the skin around the eye, on the edge of the eyelid or even underneath the eyelid. It usually occurs when the hair follicle on the eyelashes gets clogged.



Eye styes appear as a small red lump or a pimple. It can cause a little discomfort and itching. Home treatment for eye styes is effective when it is found out early and further complications can be prevented. If left untreated, a stye can lead to complications that require medical attention.

Home remedies for eye styes are as follows.


Hot compress

Make a hot compress soaking a washcloth in hot water. Squeeze out the excess water from the washcloth and apply it to the area that has the stye. Keep the hot compress applied for 10 minutes and repeat it three to five times a day. The heat makes stye come to a head like a pimple in three to four days time and eventually rupture. Hot compresses also help relieve irritation due to a stye.



Heat up a teabag in water. Squeeze the excess water and press the teabag against the stye. Keep the teabag there for three to five minutes or until it cools down. Repeat this for three days, thrice a day and you will see the stye go away.


Coriander seeds

Put a few coriander seeds in a cup of hot water and boil it. Let the mixture sit for a minute. Dab a clean washcloth into the mixture and rub the affected area with the cloth. Doing it three times a day will pull out the infection.

Herbal compress

Add two tablespoons of chamomile, agrimony, thyme or marigold and seep in a cup of boiling water. Soak a washcloth into the solution and apply it on the stye for at least 15 minutes. Do this at least 4 times a day to get rid of eye styes.


Raspberry leaves

Raspberry leaves eyewash is quite effective remedy to get rid of your stye. Add 2 tablespoons of dried raspberry leaves in a cup of boiling water. Use the warm eye rinse several times a day to see eye styes go away.


There are several home remedies for curing styes and they are most of the times effective against eye styes.  If at-home strategies don’t seem to help, consult your doctor about the stye. Also in the case of eye stye growing larger or becoming painful you should rush to a doctor. Sometimes, eye stye is caused by an infection for which you need to take antibiotics.
